About the Artwork

Midnight breaks loose in The Witches Procession. Credited to Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano, it was engraved in Rome around 1520, a whole stampede cut into copper.

Start at the top. A gaunt witch rides the spine of a giant skeleton, her hair streaming back into ropes of smoke. One arm hugs a ribbed pot. Her free hand flattens a child’s curls, and more infants huddle between ribs that rise in a picket row.

Below her, the parade runs on muscle. A curly-haired youth hauls a thighbone with both fists, and a bearded rider crouches bareback on a mount made of joints. A shaggy goat trots beside a beaked skull with a curled horn. Reeds lean out of the way.

Every shadow here is cross-hatching, thousands of burin strokes inked in lampblack on bone-ivory paper. This Italian Renaissance engraving art print brings witchcraft folklore indoors at full gallop. Hang the macabre procession above a desk, and the wall gains a night that never finishes passing.

Origin Story

Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1480–c. 1534) and Agostino Veneziano (Agostino de’ Musi, c. 1490–c. 1540) turned Italian Renaissance engraving into a language Europe could read. Trained in Bologna under the goldsmith Francesco Francia, Marcantonio studied Albrecht Dürer’s crosshatching so closely that his copies sparked a legendary dispute in Venice. In Rome around 1510 he allied with Raphael, cutting Lucretia and The Massacre of the Innocents in burin lines clean enough to carry High Renaissance design across the Alps.

Agostino, born in Venice, joined the Roman workshop by 1516, engraving after Raphael, Michelangelo and Giulio Romano. Shared monograms and manners mean prints such as Lo Stregozzo, a witch astride a colossal skeleton, still drift between attributions. After the 1527 Sack of Rome scattered the studio, Agostino returned to engrave The Academy of Baccio Bandinelli (1531): students drawing a classical statuette by candlelight.
