About the Artwork
Hugo Steiner-Prag sets one charcoal-black silhouette climbing out of a rock throat, left arm flung back like a rope cut loose. Right fingers crawl the wall for proof it still exists. Up ahead the steps go chalk-pale and bone white. Nothing waits there yet.
This is Prague grit pressed through lithographic crayon. Every grain of stone sparks like frost on slate gray. The Bohemian printmaker who gave Gustav Meyrink’s Der Golem its ghetto alleys knew how a city hides its fear in the stairwells. Old Josefov had hundreds of them. Most were damp. All led somewhere you’d regret.
Look closer and the stippled texture starts to crawl. Ash gray walls buckle into something muscular. That pool of light underfoot turns spotlight, catching a guilty man mid-step. German Expressionist dread, printed from stone.
