A boy of twelve or thirteen is handed a German print in Florence. He answers with a riot. Michelangelo Buonarroti rebuilt Martin Schongauer’s engraving in tempera and oil on panel, in the orbit of the Ghirlandaio workshop, around 1487. The Torment of Saint Anthony is believed his earliest known painting.

Condivi recorded the errand that made the copy his own, a walk to the fish market to study fins and the color of eyes. That lesson glints along the spined demon at left, its flank plated in pewter-silver scales beneath a vermilion wattle. Tormentors hoist the saint into open sky. Claws knot into his lamp-black habit. A tawny brute raises its cudgel over the bald crown, and a cinnabar fiend with a whiskered cat mouth drags at the hem.

The bestiary started as a Late Gothic copperplate from Colmar, Northern Renaissance line that Tuscan color turned to hide and fin. Under the brawl the young painter added what the engraving lacked: a river valley recalling the Arno, its crags laid in olive umber above verdigris water.

This Italian Renaissance art print suits a room wanting evidence that an Old Master began as a child staring hard at a fishmonger’s slab.

Origin Story

Michelangelo Buonarroti — sculptor of rupture, architect of theological erotics — birthed his visual cosmos from Carrara stone and Sistine ceilings.

Born 1475 in Caprese, he torched divine order into anatomical excess: David’s veined thigh, the Pietà’s passive ache, the Last Judgment’s torqued orgy of resurrection.

His Florentine Catholicism collided with Neoplatonic sensuality, transfiguring biblical bodies into queer pagan machinery. In Rome, he crowned papal ceilings with nude apostasy disguised as fresco. He sketched like a surgeon, carved like a mystic, designed like a tyrant. Painter. Engineer. Devotee of male musculature.

Michelangelo's legacy blooms in every cathedral corner where shame and beauty hold hands, lips trembling. Eternity, in flesh, made obsessive.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
