About the Artist

Antonio Fabrés y Costa (1854–1938) was a Spanish artist who sculpted with a brush as deftly as he once had with a chisel. Trained in Rome on a sculpture scholarship, he abandoned marble for paint under the influence of Mariano Fortuny, forging a luminous path through Orientalist art. Inspired by North Africa, the Alhambra, and Fortuny’s exotic visions, Fabrés painted opulent interiors and richly costumed figures with astounding precision—so refined that one work was once exhibited with a magnifying glass. Residing in Rome, Paris, and Mexico, he captivated Europe with a style both sumptuous and sculptural, forever rooted in classical harmony.
