About the Artwork

Gold clouds drift through a roofless mansion in The Oak Tree by Tosa Mitsuyoshi, and one settles where a father might look. This Japanese art print reproduces a Momoyama period album leaf from Chapter 36 of The Tale of Genji. A yamato-e miniature featuring an eleventh-century Heian romance sugared in ochre cloud, each fleck of ink, color and gold on paper laid with a brush a few hairs wide.

Tō no Chūjō sits on malachite green tatami in a shell-white court robe stamped with ash-gray crests. His face is hikime kagibana, the Heian shorthand of line-eye and hook-nose. A mountain ascetic in moss-and-gold check kneels at the step, summoned to pray a fever out of the next room.

Now follow the diagonal down. Cream beams slice the palace open in fukinuki yatai, the blown-off roof view that classical Japanese court painting used for eavesdropping on aristocrats. The next room holds Kashiwagi. He lies under celadon brocade, sick with the secret Murasaki Shikibu wrote for him: an affair with the Third Princess, Genji’s wife. No prayer in the painting reaches that far.

Mitsuyoshi, head of the Tosa school, tilts every wall so our eyes reach the sickroom before the father’s do. Pines guard an azurite stream, and snow weighs down a willow painted on the door, and the gold keeps swallowing the house room by room.

Origin Story

Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1539–1613) was a Japanese painter of the Tosa school who carried Yamato-e through the Momoyama period. That tradition, shaped by Tang dynasty blue-and-green landscape painting, runs on mineral pigments and gold leaf. Disciple of Tosa Mitsushige, head of the Court Painting Bureau, he inherited a lineage at its lowest ebb. Tradition holds he illustrated Otogi-zōshi from economic necessity. Surviving works are scarce.

His Tale of Genji Painting Album holds fifty-four paintings. Thirty-five, Kiritsubo to Wakana no Ge, carry the seal Tosa Kyūyoku; nineteen go to his disciple Chōjirō. The imperial family and nobles around Emperor Go-Yōzei transcribed the kotobagaki. Kirihaku and sunago scatter into cloud and haze. At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, his Genji screens, once sliding doors, carry Miyuki, Ukifune and Sekiya across restless gold.
