On Appledore Island, Childe Hassam watched poppies sway against delphinium spires and painted what the wind revealed. The Island Garden (1892) condenses that moment into watercolor—salmon washes slipping across tooth of handmade stock, cream blooms catching coastal glare. His American Impressionist eye rejected boundaries; flowers climb every edge, their violet-blue tips touching coral petals in chromatic collision.
Celia Thaxter's Isles of Shoals garden supplied the subject; Hassam's fluid brushwork supplied its breath. Larkspur stalks rise through olive and slate-green tangles, lavender accents pooling where wet pigment found wet paper. No pathway, no figure, no frame—the composition insists on botanical totality. Printed on a phone case, this plein-air study carries the scent of Atlantic August, each hue steeped in New Hampshire light.
