About the Artwork

E. L. Trouvelot watched the comet of 1881 trace its arc above Massachusetts and rendered what he saw in chromolithographic strokes still startling today. The tail splinters into ivory tributaries, ascending through a sky mixed from teal, viridian, and petrol blue. Near the nucleus, light concentrates into a pearl-bright point.

An observatory dome, blackened by backlight, raises its telescope toward that wandering ice. Below, a window leaks lamplight into the composition's lower corner, grounding stellar event in terrestrial space. Stars punctuate the firmament like pinpricks through indigo paper.

Trouvelot's fifteen astronomical lithographs, published in 1882, remain touchstones of 19th-century scientific illustration, where the Harvard College Observatory met the chromolithographic press. This phone case holds that Gilded Age wonder—comet tail, scattered stars, aquamarine atmosphere—fused to your daily carry.

Artist Biography

Étienne Léopold Trouvelot (1827–1895) was a French-born artist and astronomer whose legacy splits cleanly between celestial beauty and ecological catastrophe. After fleeing France for the United States in the 1850s, he settled in Massachusetts, where an ill-fated experiment with imported spongy moths unleashed one of North America’s most destructive invasive species. Trouvelot ultimately abandoned entomology and turned skyward, producing over 7,000 meticulous astronomical drawings. His chromolithographs of the Sun, Moon, planets, auroras, and nebulae, published in 1881, rank among the most exquisite scientific images of the nineteenth century. Craters on the Moon and Mars bear his name, a cosmic afterlife far cleaner than his earthly mistake.
