About the Artwork

Three skeletons in soot-brown cloaks work the long shift in The Garden of Death. Hugo Simberg drew this 1897 etching in sepia line, fresh from Akseli Gallen-Kallela's wilderness studio at Ruovesi. Here, purgatory smells of wet clay and sawn planks. Its bony caretakers carry the plain humor of Nordic folk tales, where Death is a tired neighbor with errands.

The tallest gardener stoops over a plank bench. His watering can tips toward a pot of star-headed flowers, and one heel bone lifts off the hatched ground. Beside him a second skull grins straight out of the paper. Finger bones press a sprig of buds to his chest with a nursemaid's grip.

Simberg wrote that this nursery is where the dead wait before heaven. Every potted stem is somebody. A heart-shaped cactus sits in the bottom row under bister shadow. A grandmother, perhaps. She drinks slowly.

Finnish Symbolism rarely came this gentle. The grim reaper of memento mori woodcuts has traded his scythe for a spout and chores. Simberg later painted the scene as a fresco inside Tampere Cathedral. On parchment-cream paper it stays small enough to hold, a macabre art print where grief gets watered on schedule.

Origin Story

Hugo Simberg (1873–1917) was the Finnish Symbolist painter and graphic artist who put death to work in the garden. Born in Hamina, he studied at the Drawing School of the Viipuri Friends of Art, then at the Finnish Art Society under Helene Schjerfbeck and Elin Danielson-Gambogi, before seeking out Akseli Gallen-Kallela at Kalela, his wilderness studio in Ruovesi. London, Paris and Italy followed. In The Garden of Death (1896), black-clad reapers tend their plots like nurserymen. The macabre, made tender.

After a winter in bed with meningitis came The Wounded Angel (1903): two sombre boys, a stretcher, a bandaged head, one grave stare. A 2006 Ateneum public vote named it Finland's national painting. His Tampere Cathedral frescoes, painted with Magnus Enckell, stirred indignation with a serpent and naked garland-bearing boys, passing committee by one vote. Otherworldly to the last.
