William Blake's The First Book of Urizen, Plate 14, folds a single male body into total, headlong surrender — legs thrust skyward, spine compressed, hair fanning across the lower plate in pale gold as the figure plunges inverted through the olive-teal stippled void of his 1794 illuminated book. This is the fall of Urizen's created world made anatomical: the relief etching bites the copper and the figure's own weight bites back.
Blake's foreshortening is absolute — torso and thighs collapse into one dense knot of pale rose-pink flesh, raw sienna shadowing the compressed spine, the body's full length reduced to a circular wrench of momentum. Romantic-era printmaking had no precedent for this. The hand-applied watercolor wash pools powder-blue beneath the falling form, cold as the abyss Los watches from. Dark triangular void at the upper right swallows the light the body has abandoned. Umber-brown contour holds the outline taut against the stippled ground, the one steady thing in a composition built entirely from collapse.
