About the Artwork

William Blake's The First Book of Urizen, Plate 14, folds a single male body into total, headlong surrender — legs thrust skyward, spine compressed, hair fanning across the lower plate in pale gold as the figure plunges inverted through the olive-teal stippled void of his 1794 illuminated book. This is the fall of Urizen's created world made anatomical: the relief etching bites the copper and the figure's own weight bites back.

Blake's foreshortening is absolute — torso and thighs collapse into one dense knot of pale rose-pink flesh, raw sienna shadowing the compressed spine, the body's full length reduced to a circular wrench of momentum. Romantic-era printmaking had no precedent for this. The hand-applied watercolor wash pools powder-blue beneath the falling form, cold as the abyss Los watches from. Dark triangular void at the upper right swallows the light the body has abandoned. Umber-brown contour holds the outline taut against the stippled ground, the one steady thing in a composition built entirely from collapse.
Origin Story

William Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker whose visionary imagination burned at the outer edge of Romantic art. Born in Soho, London, and trained at the Royal Academy, he rejected the rationalist orthodoxies of Reynolds and Newton alike, crowning imagination as the very body of God. His invention of relief etching — fusing handwritten verse and image on copper plate — produced the illuminated books that define him: Songs of Innocence and of Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Jerusalem. Prophetic, mystical, and ferociously individual, Blake claimed lifelong visions of angels, prophets, and divine fire.

Largely unrecognized in his lifetime, he was posthumously claimed by Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists, and Surrealists, his influence reaching Beat poets, Aldous Huxley, and Jim Morrison. The Ancient of Days, The Great Red Dragon, and the Dante watercolors confirm what critic Jonathan Jones later declared: far and away the greatest artist Britain ever produced.
