Stand in the reeds beneath Redon's strange balloon and the Symbolist lithograph tilts overhead. A giant eye hangs in the haze above a velvet-black sea. The eye is the aircraft. Graphite-fine bristles halo its rim, and the pupil has turned its back on the world to study the clouds.

Greasy lithographic crayon scuffs the weather into ash gray fog, a transfer-paper trick learned from Fantin-Latour. Chalk-pale marsh grass needles the lampblack shore. French Symbolism gains altitude here, four decades ahead of Surrealism.

This artwork is taken from À Edgar Poe, Redon's 1882 portfolio of six monochromatic lithographs created as a tribute to American writer Edgar Allan Poe. And at the time, Paris already knew hot air balloons well. Siege mail had floated over Prussian guns in 1870, and Henri Giffard's captive balloon carried crowds above the Tuileries during the 1878 Exposition Universelle.

Redon drew this charcoal Eye-Balloon a few years later and gave the gondola one rider: a severed head on a pewter dish. Poe once fooled New York readers with a newspaper balloon hoax. Redon answers him with a flight no ticket could buy.

Origin Story

Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a visionary French artist whose haunting and luminous works bridged Symbolism and Post-Impressionism, laying foundations for Surrealism.

Born in Bordeaux, Redon began his career crafting enigmatic charcoal drawings and lithographs, termed his noirs, which captured dreamlike, symbolic worlds.

Influenced by Eastern philosophy, Japanese aesthetics, and literary symbolism, Redon later embraced radiant pastels and oils, producing vibrant, mystical images that resonated with imagination and inner contemplation.

From his introspective portraits and ethereal floral arrangements to mythological visions, Redon transformed art into poetic meditations, ensuring his enduring legacy as one of modern art’s most evocative masters.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
