The Courtesan Usugumo of the Tamaya - Utagawa Kuniyoshi Art Print
About the Wall Art
Fine Art Prints

Forget cheap reproductions and printable posters. Only the best will do.
Velvety matte fine art paper (warm white, archival-grade, 200gsm) with bold, vibrant, non-toxic pigment inks. High-definition print lab techniques give you sharper details, deeper saturation and true-to-life tones. While the matte surface keeps glare down and archival-grade materials mean the colors you fall for stay vivid for decades.
Framed Fine Art Prints

Your print arrives framed and ready to hang, so it goes straight from the box to your wall.
Chevron cut wooden frames make a timeless statement in three distinctive colors: black, white and natural. Each frame is made of sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine. And your artwork is protected behind ultra-clear perspex glaze that’s lighter than glass and shatter-resistant.
Float Framed Canvas Prints

Luscious artist-grade cotton canvas, hand-stretched and finely textured, gives every detail depth and precision, catching light and color with striking clarity. While a precisely measured floating frame leaves a slim gap around the canvas, so it seems to hover with a sleek, gallery-worthy effect. Finished with your choice of frame color — black, white or natural — made from sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine.
Giclée Printing

Forget 4 color CMYK. Giclée layers up to 12 — alive with deeper shadows, richer highlights and multidimensional contrasts. Pro-lab printing process helps art stay bold & breathtaking for up to 100 years. And the neo-pigment, water-based inks are 100% non-hazardous and toxin-free.
About the Artwork
A pigment crossed two oceans to dress her. Berlin blue, a Prussian colormaker’s accident ferried into Nagasaki by Dutch and Chinese traders, grew cheap enough by 1830 to flood Edo woodcuts. Utagawa Kuniyoshi let it do every job on a star of the licensed quarter.
The Courtesan Usugumo of the Tamaya shares her name, thin cloud, with a chapter of The Tale of Genji. Above her, bokashi thins the sky from inky navy to naked paper, and spring blossom drifts through the fade like spilled face powder. Under them the oiran’s coiffure bristles with kanzashi hairpins, jutting like oars off a Sumida riverboat. Her robes read as glazed porcelain, each layer brushed with a different pattern. The brocade sash knots in front, the mark of her trade. Calligraphy gives her address: Edo-machi, first block. It names her child attendants, Haruka and Yayoi, one tucked at her hip.
This Japanese woodblock print is aizuri-e, the single-pigment craze of the Tenpo era. Safflower rouge is the lone trespasser, a flick at mouth and collar. Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi signed beneath her box lantern, beside publisher Sanoya Kihei’s seal. This Japanese courtesan art print hangs like a shard of sometsuke. Cracked with pattern, still wet at the lip.
