The Courtesan Hanao of Ogi-ya - Utagawa Kuniyoshi Art Print
About the Wall Art
Fine Art Prints

Forget cheap reproductions and printable posters. Only the best will do.
Velvety matte fine art paper (warm white, archival-grade, 200gsm) with bold, vibrant, non-toxic pigment inks. High-definition print lab techniques give you sharper details, deeper saturation and true-to-life tones. While the matte surface keeps glare down and archival-grade materials mean the colors you fall for stay vivid for decades.
Framed Fine Art Prints

Your print arrives framed and ready to hang, so it goes straight from the box to your wall.
Chevron cut wooden frames make a timeless statement in three distinctive colors: black, white and natural. Each frame is made of sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine. And your artwork is protected behind ultra-clear perspex glaze that’s lighter than glass and shatter-resistant.
Float Framed Canvas Prints

Luscious artist-grade cotton canvas, hand-stretched and finely textured, gives every detail depth and precision, catching light and color with striking clarity. While a precisely measured floating frame leaves a slim gap around the canvas, so it seems to hover with a sleek, gallery-worthy effect. Finished with your choice of frame color — black, white or natural — made from sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine.
Giclée Printing

Forget 4 color CMYK. Giclée layers up to 12 — alive with deeper shadows, richer highlights and multidimensional contrasts. Pro-lab printing process helps art stay bold & breathtaking for up to 100 years. And the neo-pigment, water-based inks are 100% non-hazardous and toxin-free.
About the Artwork
Spring comes to the Yoshiwara as a delivery. Each year Edo’s licensed quarter planted cherry trees down its main street for a few weeks. Utagawa Kuniyoshi sets one over The Courtesan Hanao of Ogi-ya, and its ivory cherry blossoms float on a dusk of Prussian blue.
Kuniyoshi built his fame on tattooed warriors. Here his knife-sharp line turns to a bijin-ga beauty. She is an oiran on parade, and a dozen kanzashi hairpins spoke out around her paper-pale face. Her obi is knotted in front, the mark of her profession, with frost-pale peonies swelling across its ink-navy ground. Swallows cut through a hem the tint of shallow water.
This is aizuri-e, the indigo-toned craze that swept Edo period print shops in the 1830s. And her name hangs at your shoulder in the brushed Berlin blue. Edo called this imported color bero-ai. A pupil of the Utagawa school, Kuniyoshi drew the Courtesan Hanao of Ogi-ya for block cutters who carved every hair into cherry wood. Sky and sakura drink from the same bowl as her kimono. One imported pigment does all the talking. Vermilion gets a few syllables at her lips and collar.
A kamuro waits at her elbow under a crown of clustered leaves. Hang this Japanese woodblock print and the ukiyo-e parade keeps moving beneath blossoming trees.
