In The Angel of Sodom, Christian Bérard stages a vision both intimate and apocalyptic. Against a void of earthy darkness, the central figure stands unclothed, wings erupting in strokes of vermilion, cobalt, and chalk. His skin is modeled with smoky washes, his form wavering between corporeal presence and spectral absence. Painted in the 1940s, this work embodies Parisian modernist currents, from surrealist theater to neoclassical echoes undone by expressionist urgency.
Bérard—known for collaborations with Jean Cocteau and Coco Chanel—renders a male body suspended between glory and ruin, scripture and queerness. The sword he grips is less weapon than burden, a sign of impossible redemption. This print preserves Bérard’s legacy as a painter of transgression, theatricality, and unearthly beauty.
