Ito Jakuchu's Swallow and Camellia holds a bird in mid-plunge, its cream-white head aimed down through a ground the color of wet sumi ink. Below, a tsubaki blossom waits, crimson throat open.

Jakuchu drew this meeting in Edo period Kyoto around 1771. He had quit the family grocery at Nishiki market to paint. A Zen lay brother, he kept chickens and stared at them for years before trusting his brush. That stare survives here. Thin persimmon-orange lines trace every flight feather, and the tail slices upward, a blade leaving its sheath.

Start with the foliage. Jade-green leaves are freckled with rice-pale dots, and their edges rust toward maroon where the cold has been chewing. Round tangerine blemishes show where caterpillars fed. Across Edo Japan, the Kano school liked its leaves flawless. Jakuchu counted the damage as part of the plant.

Meiji era carvers recut the design around 1900 as a polychrome Japanese woodblock print and kept his strangest decisions. Teal leaves wear a frost of chalk-white stipple. Their tips bruise to oxblood under veins of amber. At the right edge a vermilion seal burns, one lit window in all that night.

This bird-and-flower art print stops the season at its ripest hour. Camellias fall whole in Japanese gardens, head and all. Hang this one, and the fall never comes.

Origin Story

Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) was an Edo period Japanese painter known for his captivating depictions of birds. His work, while rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, demonstrated modern experimentation with perspective and stylistic techniques.

Jakuchū's vivid and realistic approach placed him alongside Maruyama Ōkyo, and he gained recognition as one of Kyoto’s leading artists. Deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism, Jakuchū balanced spiritual elements with a growing awareness of Kyoto's increasingly commercial society.

His art, celebrated for its detail and eccentricities, played a key role in Japan's cultural tapestry, and his legacy continues to shape Japanese art history today.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
