About the Artwork

Three dark horseshoe windows stare from a white wall, and below them a man in a mustard jacket and a calf cross the square at the same slow pace. Henry Ossawa Tanner paints the animal in umber and rust with pale socks, its head low beside the man's rust shorts. Three horseshoe windows rimmed in green hold deep teal shadow above a green door at the foot of a stair.

Portugal took Tangier in 1471 and England held it from 1661 to 1684, yet the horseshoe arch over these windows is the Moorish form that outlasted both. The stair climbs to two arched doorways. Whitewashed walls rise on three sides while a gray-green wall at the far left slides back into shade.

Tanner, who had lived in France since 1891, scrapes the oil thin over a lilac-gray ground so the pavement glows faintly pink, then builds the walls in chalky ridges. The thin paint holds the heat and the thick paint holds the light. Nothing else moves, so the man and his calf set the only pace in the picture.

Street Scene, Tangier (Man Leading Calf) awaits your living room or hallway as a whitewashed street-scene, where a man and his animal cross a hot pink pavement and your whole house slows to their pace.

Origin Story

Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937) is an African American painter who found artistic freedom in Paris. Trained by Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later at the Académie Julian, Tanner fused American Realism with French academic finesse, Impressionist light, and Symbolist mood. His celebrated canvases The Banjo Lesson, The Resurrection of Lazarus and The Annunciation reveal draftsmanship, “Tanner blues,” and spiritual intensity. Supported by patrons including Joseph Crane Hartzell and Rodman Wanamaker, he exhibited at the Paris Salon, won medals, and in 1923 was named chevalier of the Legion of Honor. His legacy endures worldwide today.
