A mouth hangs open in an 1870s Yokohama studio. Street Minstrel, Goze holds a shamisen player mid-vowel, eyes pressed shut, chin tipped into studio daylight. Suzuki Shin'ichi's wet collodion plate needed seconds of stillness. The singer fed it one long note.

Goze is the word for blind women musicians organized in guilds since the Edo period. Suzuki trained under Shimooka Renjō before opening his business in 1873. Foreign visitors bought his Japanese trades for souvenir albums, each albumen silver print pulled from a glass negative. A cobbler sat. She sang.

Color came later, by brush. A studio painter floated celadon aqua over the dotted tenugui headscarf and the under-kimono hem. The outer robe stays slate gray above an ochre-brown obi. Wooden geta raise her bare toes over scattered pebbles.

Watch her fists. Pewter cloth bunches at the elbow where the three-stringed shamisen leans past her shoulder. A plectrum juts from the strumming hand. Robin's-egg dots speckle the kerchief knotted over her brow, and that tint washes the robe above her wooden clogs. A tobacco-brown sash cinches the layers.

Hang this hand-tinted art print, and vintage Japanese photography lends your wall a traveler from Meiji Japan. She travels light and her notes linger forever in the air.

Origin Story

Suzuki Shin'ichi I (1835–1918) was the Japanese photographer whose road to the camera ran through catastrophe. Born the third son of the Takahashi family in Iwashina, now Matsuzaki, Shizuoka, he lost both parents young and married into the Suzuki household of Shimoda in 1854. That same year a tsunami from the Ansei great earthquakes destroyed the family business. He turned to sericulture, then to silver: by 1867 he was apprenticed at Shimooka Renjō's Yokohama studio.

Commissioned by J. R. Black, publisher of The Far East, he documented rural life in 1872–1873, then opened his own studio that November. Portraits. Souvenir albums. Mount Fuji in hand-coloured albumen prints, bought mostly by foreign residents and visitors. Photographs printed on porcelain, his own innovation, twelve yen each. In 1889 he and Maruki Riyō were commissioned to photograph Emperor Meiji and his wife.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
