Reijer Stolk's Stooping Naked Man of 1924 coils a bare male body into near-total self-enclosure, spine pitched steeply forward, head hanging level with the knees. No studio props, no floor line — only flesh curving back into itself, a figure stripped to the blunt fact of anatomy. The short-cropped dark hair, the single dense passage in the composition, anchors the bowed head as the work's gravitational center — the whole body orbiting that compressed, downturned crown.
Stolk studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts in the early twentieth century, and that rigorous atelier training in life drawing is audible in every open-contour hatch across the lower back. The Dutch Expressionist draftsmanship works in dilute graphite wash here against warm cream-buff paper, building the broad dorsal plane in sepia-tan tone gradations that thicken across the shoulder blades and thin to near-nothing along the outer hip.
