Here sits a poet with no face left to flatter. František Klimkovič crowns his sitter with a loose wreath of sap-green leaves, a mock laurel slipping over bone white, and the skull wears it like a Romantic laureate who outlived every review.

Klimkovič's hometown of Kassa in 1860 was a multilingual crossroads of the Austrian Empire, and this skull painting carries the weather of that decade. Chiaroscuro does the talking. Light strikes the forehead hard. Shadow drinks the nasal cavity and the hollow beneath the cheekbone, leaving burnt sienna stains where flesh once kept its counsel.

Somewhere behind it waits Hamlet’s Yorick, minus the prince. The skull keeps its own company on a russet tabletop, mouth open mid-sentence. At the temple a speck of forget-me-not blue finishes the joke. Romantic sweethearts traded them pressed, as pledges of faithful love.

The vanitas symbolism refuses to fall silent. Still Life with a Skull and a Forget-Me-Not makes dark academia wall art for a study lit by one lamp, a memento mori leaving one blue riddle on the brow of the dead.

Origin Story

František Klimkovič (Ferenc Klimkovics, 1826–1890) was a painter, restorer and educator who carried the Klimkovič family’s craft from a Košice workshop into the academies of Europe. Taught by his father Ignác, he drew under Giuseppe Marastoni in Budapest, studied with Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller in Vienna, then trained under Léon Cogniet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Back in Košice, he and his brother Vojtech founded the region’s first private painting school in 1853, restored paintings in St. Elisabeth Cathedral and co-founded the museum association that became the East Slovak Museum. Work took him to Debrecen; from 1869 he taught drawing in Budapest. Alongside sacred scenes, portraits and genre pictures, he turned to historical Romanticism drawn from Hungarian history, while landscapes returned to Slovak subjects. His work is held by the East Slovak Gallery and Hungarian National Gallery.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
