About the Artist

Michalina Janoszanka (1889–1952) was more than the luminous muse of Jacek Malczewski — she was a modernist pioneer who painted dreams directly onto glass. Trained in Kraków and Vienna, she mastered oil portraits, still lifes, and devotional works, but it was her reverse paintings that shimmer with radical originality. Borrowing a folk technique long relegated to craft, Janoszanka transformed it into high art: metallic veins tracing birds, butterflies, and flowers across gem-toned, kaleidoscopic landscapes. Her psychedelic skies and stained-glass textures bridge tradition and experiment, placing her alongside early 20th-century innovators like Marsden Hartley and Rebecca Salsbury James. Though overshadowed in life, Janoszanka’s visionary glass paintings illuminate modernism’s forgotten frontier.
