Her hair has no color yet. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi drew only its outline, a tall coiffure of looped side-locks crowned by a scalloped comb tinted pale slate. Ukiyo-e designers often stopped there. Cutting every strand fell to the master carver and his cherry woodblock.

So this sheet catches a picture halfway to being born. Sketch of a Woman with a Battledore is a late nineteenth-century brush drawing from the years Edo gave way to Meiji Japan. Short combed strokes mark her hairline. A watery rose blush pools at her temple, and her mouth is one bright dab of fuchsia.

Then the collars. Doubled lines stack at her throat, layers of New Year kimono drawn with a loaded brush that splits and dries mid-stroke. An obi bow juts from her back. And the hagoita she carries is blank too. Fancy holiday paddles wore padded-silk portraits of kabuki stars. Hers waits bare, a flat board shaped like an unprinted page.

Yoshitoshi trained under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became the last great name in ukiyo-e. This late nineteenth-century bijin-ga ink drawing shows his hand before any woodblock came near. Hang this Japanese ink drawing art print by a cold window and wait for the shuttlecock to drop. This Yoshitoshi beauty stays forever unfinished and all the more beautiful for it.

Origin Story

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was the luminous final star of Japan’s ukiyo-e tradition, brilliantly fusing classical techniques with bold innovation.

Born in Edo, Yoshitoshi apprenticed under master Kuniyoshi, developing exceptional skill in capturing delicate emotion and intricate beauty.

His prints—ranging from tender portrayals of everyday intimacy to evocative mythical scenes—reflect a profound appreciation of Japanese culture during its transformative shift from Edo to Meiji eras.

Celebrated series such as One Hundred Aspects of the Moon highlight his poetic vision and meticulous artistry, confirming Yoshitoshi’s enduring legacy as a master who gently illuminated life’s subtle poetry with elegance and grace.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
