About the Artwork

A skeleton raises one hand to the edge of the case and holds it there. The open jaw holds one low note while two hollow orbits listen. Karl Wiener’s smudged graphite giving this vintage skeleton phone case its voice, a rasp over lichen cream. Setting this greeter against ink indigo, the danse macabre phone case now carries the spooky hello everywhere you go.

Drawn in 1944, when Allied bombers from Italian airfields began reaching Vienna, this WW2 skeleton art answers that sky with spread fingers. The pencil line comes from a hand that had been numbering leaves since 1923. Graphite hatching sinks both orbits.

Scribbled contour crosses the olive-bone garment in loose triangles and ends in a dagged hem that fools wore from the late Middle Ages. Karl Wiener also cut collage into The 150 Leaves, and here every mark stays pencil. The skull fills the left edge of the case, taking the place Dutch vanitas skull art of the 1600s allowed it.

Pale bone, dark ground. This vintage skeleton drawing holds the contrast edge to edge. Skeleton, The 150 Leaves 1944 awaits your pocket as a memento mori case, where a bony hand hails you each time you reach for the phone.

Origin Story

Karl Wiener (1901–1949) was the Austrian painter and graphic artist whose socially charged modernism never quite found its market. Raised in a Graz social-democratic family, he studied at the state art school, the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Berthold Löffler, and the Academy under Rudolf Jettmar. Travel and scholarship exposed him to international movements; his early work absorbed New Objectivity and Expressionism, echoing George Grosz, John Heartfield, Otto Dix, and Kurt Schwitters. He made strikingly early collages, hinting at later Pop Art, while pen-and-ink "grotesques" fused war's horror, Nazi rule, and private despair into visions of warning.

Earning his living as a teacher and graphic designer, he survived the Nazi era in obscurity. A lifelong preoccupation with suicide haunted him; dismissed in 1947, he killed himself in his Vienna studio in 1949.
