About the Artwork

Skeleton of a Hand by Jan l’Admiral lets its whole weight sink onto a mound of umber shadow. Five fingers spill over the edge. Phalanges hang loose above a bottle green cloth slumping toward the floor. Count the knuckles. The thumb wanders off on its own errand.

Eighteenth century Amsterdam smelled of canal water and lamp oil. Here l’Admiral painted this gouache drawing for a city hungry to see bone made legible. His collaborator, Leiden professor Bernhard Siegfried Albinus, wanted every ridge accounted for. He got ivory with a smoky ochre undertone pooling in each metacarpal. Carpal bones huddle at the wrist, a gray-white family gathered against the cold.

Slate gray swallows the room. Light lands from the left and refuses to leave. Now this anatomical art curls around your own living fingers as a skeleton hand phone case. A memento mori from the Rijksmuseum vaults rides in your pocket, a dissection lesson with a camera bump. Your bones meet his bones each time a call comes in. Somebody, somewhere, is still holding on.

Origin Story

Jan l’Admiral (1699–1773) was an Amsterdam engraver who coaxed the body’s hidden architecture into colour. Born in the Dutch Republic, he trained alongside his brother Jacob under Jacob Christoph Le Blon, pioneer of colour printing, mastering a mezzotint method that built each image from separately inked plates in red, yellow and blue. Between 1736 and 1741 he worked with Leiden anatomist Bernhard Siegfried Albinus, translating drawings by Frederik Ruysch into colour mezzotints of veins, skin and brain so tender they pass for watercolours.

His plate of a premature fetus’s brain remains his most admired print, while rare gouache studies of a skeletal hand and foot rest in the Rijksmuseum. Later he drew and etched portraits for the 1764 edition of Karel van Mander’s Schilderboeck, a quiet coda for an artist who mapped both anatomy and art history.
