About the Artwork

An ink black monster raises a rose bouquet to a caramel brown door and waits, muzzle tipped up, whiskers stiff with manners. A brass latch curls olive beside the lace-paper cone and listens for a footfall. Thomas Theodor Heine painted Simplicissimus held in this pause in 1911, and this art nouveau phone case keeps the silence.

Simplicissimus, the Munich satirical weekly, bared its bulldog teeth in print, so a congratulation call with roses lands as a surprise. On this vintage cartoon phone case, slate sheen gathers at the ear tips and slides down the throat. In 1896 Thomas Theodor Heine first drew this monster with its bitten chain, and the same hand now steadies a cone of petals.

Stippled sage leaves crowd the right edge in opaque dabs, none of them outlined. Ivory lace paper cups the stems, a florist’s collar for bouquets that go calling. Dry-brush grain scuffs the panel, and pale speckles pool in its curved molding. He pressed ink and gouache into card here, a pairing his originals often use. Rose pink and carmine petals overlap, and every curl keeps a single fleck. Simplicissimus as a Congratulator awaits your pocket as a Jugendstil phone case, where the roses wait at their door each time you wake the screen.

Origin Story

Thomas Theodor Heine (1867–1948) was the German painter, illustrator and cartoonist who gave satire teeth. Born in Leipzig, he was expelled from school for his caricatures, then studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and, briefly, the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1896 he joined Simplicissimus and drew its red bulldog, chain snapped, jaws bared at authority. Fusing the whiplash line of Jugendstil with the poster punch of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the inky elegance of Aubrey Beardsley and the flat planes of Japanese woodcuts, Heine turned lithography into a scalpel.

Mocking Kaiser Wilhelm II earned him six months of fortress confinement in 1898, yet the pen never softened. Forced out by the Nazis in 1933, he moved through Prague and Oslo to Stockholm, where his cynical novel Ich warte auf Wunder (I Wait for Miracles) appeared in 1942.
