The Simplicissimus as Congratulator catches satire paying a house call. Thomas Theodor Heine painted it in 1911, gouache and ink on cardboard, fifteen years after he began drawing for the Munich weekly Simplicissimus. A soot-black devil mounts putty-gray stone steps with a Biedermeier posy of rose madder blooms. Its paper lace cuff stands stiff, a clerk’s collar turned upside down.

One step below waits the vermilion-red bulldog, emblem of the satirical magazine, a bottle-green bow tied to its collar. Its blunt head tilts up. Both callers have dressed for a honey-toned double door whose brass knob gleams under a lilac fanlight, the sort of threshold Wilhelmine Germany kept polished against such guests.

Heine, political cartoonist and painter, knew what politeness cost. His 1898 drawings earned him six months of fortress confinement, and Jugendstil line stayed his sharpest tool afterward. Vine leaves sag over the lintel. His TTH monogram sits low among the flagstones. In this vintage art print, German caricature arrives with flowers and waits to be let in.

Origin Story

Thomas Theodor Heine (1867–1948) was the German painter, illustrator and cartoonist who gave satire teeth. Born in Leipzig, he was expelled from school for his caricatures, then studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and, briefly, the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1896 he joined Simplicissimus and drew its red bulldog, chain snapped, jaws bared at authority. Fusing the whiplash line of Jugendstil with the poster punch of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the inky elegance of Aubrey Beardsley and the flat planes of Japanese woodcuts, Heine turned lithography into a scalpel.

Mocking Kaiser Wilhelm II earned him six months of fortress confinement in 1898, yet the pen never softened. Forced out by the Nazis in 1933, he moved through Prague and Oslo to Stockholm, where his cynical novel Ich warte auf Wunder (I Wait for Miracles) appeared in 1942.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
