About the Artwork

Egg white and silver salts hold four women at the shoulder. Showing Back Style holds the moment Kusakabe Kimbei's Yokohama studio turned the portrait around, a hand-colored albumen print where faces go missing and knots do the talking.

Each obi sits squared in a taiko drum knot, one in powder-blue moiré, its neighbor in gilt-olive brocade. Tasuki cords cross every spine, ivory at one end of the bench and oxblood crimson near the other. A shell-pink bow slumps on a shoulder. Wisteria lavender loops the fourth kimono, each tint laid by a colorist’s brush over sepia gloss. Lacquer-black nihongami climbs above pale napes, pinned with kanzashi and one silk flower.

Meiji-era travelers carried the treaty port home inside lacquered souvenir albums. They paid for faces. Four women keep theirs on a bench under checked cloth, and 19th-century Japanese photography gains a studio portrait with a private joke sewn in. Hang this art print as vintage Japanese wall art and your room joins the line. The glance you wait for stays with them.

Origin Story

Kusakabe Kimbei (1841–1934) was a Japanese photographer who turned the souvenir into a stage. Born in Kōfu, Kai Province, he learned the trade as photographic colourist and assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, brushing pigment across other men’s pictures. In 1881 he opened his own workshop in Yokohama’s Benten-dōri quarter, moving to Honmachi in 1889. Foreign clients stumbled over Kusakabe. He traded as Kimbei.

By 1893 his was among the leading Japanese studios supplying art to Western customers. The catalogue ran deep with Japanese women: hired geisha, posed in the traditional bijinga style, popular with tourists of the day. Albums opened accordion fashion. Around 1885 he acquired the negatives of Beato, Stillfried and Uchida Kuichi, plus some of Ueno Hikoma’s Nagasaki negatives. The assistant now owned his employers’ archive. He retired in 1914.
