Seven Flying Wild Geese cross the lid of a ryoshi-bako, a Japanese box for documents built to keep writing paper flat and dry. Sometime in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, a lacquer master working in Edo-period taste gave that paper a night sky to sleep under. The method is maki-e, the sprinkled picture. Under the Tokugawa peace it dressed the document boxes of samurai households, and this ryoshi-bako shows why the craft was prized.

The ground is roiro, urushi polished until lampblack turns to still water. Across it the geese slant in two ragged lines, each wing cut from burnished gold. Classical waka poets called a letter a goose’s message, after an old Han tale of word tied to a bird’s leg. So the lid tells you what the box holds. Mail, already airborne.

Below them, takamaki-e hills swell in raised honey-gold relief, their trees leafed in indigo so deep it reads as dusk itself. Nashiji dust drifts where mist should be. A wheat-pale stream loops past a rock at the corner, and a pewter-white crescent moon slips under a cloud bank to watch.

Hang this Japanese lacquerware art print near a desk and watch autumn arrive every evening with news under its wing.

Origin Story

A ryoshi-bako (料紙箱) is the traditional Japanese ornamental box where paper waits to become language. Larger than its companion, it holds writing paper, documents, letters and calligraphy accessories beneath a lid that performs before a single word is brushed. The body is lightweight wood, paulownia or hinoki cypress, finished in urushi, the intricate Japanese lacquer that turns timber into dark water.

Then the surface ignites. Maki-e scatters gold and silver powder into pictures; takamaki-e lifts them into relief; raden sets mother-of-pearl inlay glinting like wet moonlight; metal mountings finish the work. Paired with a smaller matching suzuribako, the inkstone and writing utensil box, it completes the traditional Japanese scholar’s writing set. What began as storage became a luxurious household and ceremonial object: stationery raised to lacquer art.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
