Inside Jacob Merkelbach's Leidseplein atelier, a woman folds onto her heels, spine curving toward the camera while her hair falls dark across the face she will not give us. Her right hand lifts to the crown, elbow forming a slow arc; her left palm presses the thigh, fingers loose. Behind her, a tungsten spotlight blooms into a porcelain-pale disc, gradient grays dissolving outward into bituminous black — the signature halation of bromide silver paper exposed by hand.

Portret van een zittend naakt belongs to the 1915–1930 vintage nude photography boom in Holland, when Pictorialist softness met emergent modernism. The kneeling figure becomes pure tonal architecture: ivory hip, pearl shoulder, charcoal void. Sitting nude, Amsterdam studio portraiture, interwar Dutch photography — held in one breathing frame.

Origin Story

Jacob Merkelbach (1877–1942) was a Dutch photographer whose Amsterdam studio became one of the interwar city's most distinguished addresses for portraiture. Trained within his family's photographic trade — a world already touched by cinema's earliest ambitions — he opened Atelier J. Merkelbach in 1913 above the luxury fashion house Hirsch & Cie on Leidseplein, drawing an elite clientele of society figures, theater performers, and cultural luminaries. Refined studies in Vienna deepened his command of pictorialist composition, retouching, and high-finish printing.

His lens found Queen Wilhelmina, Mata Hari, and conductor Willem Mengelberg; his prints reveal a photographer moving fluently from pictorialist warmth toward modernist precision — cleaner lines, sculptural light, and dramatic shadow. He pioneered rare techniques including carbon printing and the Jos-Pe dye imbibition process for early color work. Over 200 of his photographs are held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; 40,000 glass negatives survive in the Amsterdam City Archives.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
