About this Artwork

The young naiad reclines half-turned, her profile catching pale ash-gray light against a soft cinder-toned ground. Canova worked the back muscles to such fineness that the deltoid seems warmed from within, the trapezius gliding into shoulder blade with sfumato softness rare in Neoclassicism.

Look closely and the marble reveals freckled pitting, the slow oxidation of Carrara across two centuries. A swan's plumage gathers beneath her thigh in feathered passages of bocciardo and abrasive polish.

Commissioned in 1815, completed in 1824 just before the sculptor's death, the figure descends from Hellenistic river-nymph types yet sings in the early-nineteenth-century Italian voice. The cropped photograph isolates her quietude, her freshwater lineage, her grave Romantic poise.
Origin Story

Antonio Canova (1757–1822) was born in Possagno in the Venetian Republic, the grandson of a stonemason, and became the supreme voice of Neoclassical sculpture. Trained in Venice under Giuseppe Bernardi and shaped by Rome's antiquarian circles, he forged a style that balanced Greek restraint with Baroque warmth — marble surfaces polished to the softness of skin, myths rendered with breath still in them. His Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss, The Three Graces, and Venus Victrix remain among the most celebrated sculptures in Western art.

Courted by Napoleon, patronized by popes, and honoured by George III, Canova worked across Possagno, Venice, Rome, Vienna, Paris, and London, reshaping European sculpture's moral and aesthetic compass. Appointed Inspector-General of Papal Antiquities and later created Marquis of Ischia, he used both titles with rare integrity — recovering looted artworks and funding young sculptors from his own fortune. His Tempio Canoviano in Possagno stands as his final self-portrait in stone.
