Artwork Description

Feast your eyes on this kaleidoscopic queen parrotfish, immortalized by Luigi Balugani's 18th-century brush. This fine art print showcases the Bologna-born prodigy's knack for capturing nature's flamboyance.

Balugani's scientific precision, honed during his African odyssey with James Bruce, breathes life into every iridescent scale. The fish's regal countenance, adorned with a tapestry of greens, pinks, and blues, seems to shimmer on the parchment. Its forked tail and prominent eye invite you to dive into the Age of Exploration, when each sketch unveiled oceanic wonders like portals through natural history, bridging art and ichthyology.

Perfect for coral reef enthusiasts, maritime historians, or those seeking to infuse their space with tropical elegance. By displaying this print, you're not just adorning walls – you're preserving Balugani's tragically brief yet brilliant legacy. Let this queen parrotfish, rendered with Accademia Clementina-trained finesse, transform your room into a cabinet of aquatic curiosities.

More by Luigi Balugani

Artist Biography

Luigi Balugani, born in 1737 in Bologna, was an 18th-century Italian artist whose work bridged botany, architecture, and zoology.

Trained under Giuseppe Civoli at the Accademia Clementina, Balugani’s talent led him to accompany Scottish explorer James Bruce on a journey across Africa. There, Balugani documented the continent's flora, fauna, and landscapes with meticulous detail. His sketches, capturing everything from exotic flowers to ancient temples, reflect both artistic precision and scientific curiosity.

Though his life ended in 1770, Balugani’s natural history legacy endures, with works held in prestigious collections like Yale's Center for British Art, blending exploration, science, and art into timeless visual storytelling.
