Simonetta Vespucci, Genoese-born consort of the Florentine Vespucci dynasty, sits in late Quattrocento profile as Piero di Cosimo wields oil and tempera across poplar with the patience of a panel painter raised under Cosimo Rosselli. A portrait built around absence, painted years after her death at twenty-two, when Lorenzo de' Medici and the Florentine poets had already turned her into Venus.
A hush of mineral pigment carries her name forward. Her bound coiffure, threaded with river pearls and rubies, rises like a reliquary of vanity. Cumulus piles in slate and lavender; foliage shifts from skeletal winter to dense summer green within a single panel. Lead-tin yellow hair, alabaster skin, carmine stripes on her draped mantle —
The sky behind her bruises into prussian and lead white, a storm forming over the Arno valley while bare branches scratch the air on her left and dark cypress massings settle on her right. Pearls thread her braids. A serpent kisses her sternum. Florentine portraiture at the edge of myth.
