Stand close to this Shibata Zeshin art print and the peony turns lamp. Eggshell petals throw their glow across a field of beaten old gold. Petal folds over petal in scalloped umber outline, crowding a saffron ring of stamens set in a faint celadon blush. This is botan, the king of flowers, painted fat with late-spring wealth.

Zeshin built the scene in urushi-e, lacquer brushed straight onto paper. Sap from the lacquer tree gave him soot-black stems and tobacco-brown leaves, each vein a hairline of gold. Meiji-period Tokyo was racing toward steam and brick in the early 1880s. He was in his seventies, still coaxing a stubborn medium into the softness of Maruyama-Shijō brushwork.

Look low. Crimson buds stud a gnarled branch beside dry grass, and a burnt-umber garden rock shoulders up the right edge, pocked and patient. Bird-and-flower painting has paired stone with blossom for centuries, long life leaning on quick splendor.

From the album Lacquer Paintings of Various Subjects, this Japanese flower illustration art print hangs heavy and bright. A half-shut bud waits above, olive sepals still gripping what comes next.

Origin Story

Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was the Edo-born lacquer painter who made tree sap behave like ink. From a family of shrine carpenters, he apprenticed at eleven to the lacquerer Koma Kansai II, then to Suzuki Nanrei for Shijō school painting. Called "Japan's greatest lacquerer," he inherited the Koma workshop in 1835 and worked from the late Edo period into the Meiji era.

When law rationed gold and silver, he faked iron with bronze and found elegance in restraint. He painted urushi-e onto paper, thickened lacquer with starch to mimic oils, and revived seikai-ha, combing waves through setting lacquer. Maki-e panels, inrō and woodblock prints carry his iki: waves, lotus, crows against a red sky. Named to the Imperial Art Committee in 1890, he signed quietly. On one tsuba, a lacquer ant carries a character of his name away.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
