This Palden Lhamo phone case holds the Glorious Goddess in full wrath, the only woman among the eight dharmapalas, her three eyes fixed on a sea of blood. The wrathful deity wearing flat indigo skin, scratched where the pigment has worn.

Under the Ganden Phodrang government in Lhasa, Tibetan Buddhist protector deity art kept its set proportions, and her third eye, nose and fanged mouth sit on one exact vertical. Bone-white skulls ring the crown at the intervals set by an apprentice’s proportion grid, each topped with a turquoise jewel. Malachite green silk, dotted with gold, whips across the left. Opaque mineral pigment, the habit of Central Tibetan thangka art in the 18th and 19th centuries, sits in flat plates. Her ochre-gold mule wears madder beads and a verdigris snake for a rein. Origin Story

Palden Lhamo ("Glorious Goddess", Sanskrit Shri Devi) is the only female among the Eight Guardians of the Dharma and the fierce, enlightened protectress of Tibet and the Dalai Lama lineage. Once the rakshasa queen Remati, she slaughtered her own son to break his anti-Buddhist destiny, fled on a white mule, and answered her husband's arrow by turning the wound into an eye that watches the twenty-four regions.

Deep blue, red-haired, three-eyed, she rides side-saddle across a sea of blood, human skull at her lips. She is a wrathful emanation of Tara, guardian of the oracle lake Lhamo La-tso, and patron of the black-ground nag thang paintings hung in the tantric gonkhang. She is considered an enlightened being—terror in service of dharma.
