The overgrown tombstone begins at ground level, where a low-angle lens tips a Victorian stone cross into a sky of bone-white cumulus. Ivy has taken the shaft whole. Its stems climb in pewter braids, wrist-thick and stripped of every leaf. What remains is the grip.

The garden cemetery movement of the 1830s promised tidy parks for the dead. Nobody told the plants. Here nature reclaims the plot one tendril at a time. Victorian mourning culture read ivy as evergreen memory, a plant that clings past death. This one kept the promise too well.

Bark plates swallow the plinth's edge and creep toward a blackletter epitaph, where a line from Psalm 127 still shows through mottled stone: He giveth his beloved sleep. One tier up, the carver cut the word infant.

This black and white photography boils the cemetery down to graphite shadow and silvered grain. It is a memento mori with sun on its shoulders. A Gothic Revival pinnacle stands at funerary attention. A draped pedestal waits at the right edge. The cross arms tilt, pitted by more than a century of rain, held in the air by a vine that never learned to let go.

Origin Story

The garden cemetery movement emerged in the nineteenth century as a radical reimagining of burial grounds, transforming urban churchyards into landscaped sanctuaries of memory and transcendence. Inspired by the English garden movement and inaugurated by Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1831, these pastoral retreats—designed by Jacob Bigelow and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society—relocated death from crowded city centers to rolling parklands outside Boston, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn. Père Lachaise in Paris had lit the path; America followed with Laurel Hill and Green-Wood, weaving horticultural ambition with Romantic sensibility. Winding paths revealed weeping willows, classical monuments, and Victorian symbolism—ivy for memory, oak for immortality—creating what Justice Joseph Story called a "middle landscape" between earth and heaven.

Before public parks existed, these garden cemeteries served as democratized arboretums where citizens encountered art and nature alike. The movement reshaped civic life, offering contemplative space amid ornamental grounds and sculptural grandeur. By century's end, the rise of lawn cemeteries and true urban parks dimmed their novelty, yet Mount Auburn's winding contours remain landmarks of nineteenth-century idealism—eternal gardens where mortality meets the picturesque.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
