Description

An absurd ballet unfolds on parchment: the Oni, swollen with sinew and myth, brandishes his club not in fury, but as a conductor's baton. Around him whirl dream-creatures—each a crescendo of color and contradiction.

The peacock, jewel-feathered prophet, eyes the chaos with imperious disdain, its plumage a fan of golden irises—watching, waiting. Beneath, Shishi lions, carved from patterned thunderclouds, wrestling gravity with feline grace, their eyes burning with guardian flame. Between them sits the strangest sentinel—a rotund, silk-robed cat, smirking with imperial satire, the lotus embroidered across its chest mocking notions of stillness. And an insect, absurdly oversized, crawls near the Oni’s foot like a forgotten punctuation in a divine joke.

Everywhere: textures fold like origami riddles; colors clash like ancestral feuds. This is not just a ukiyo-e print—it’s a spiritual pageant mid-mutation. Bound by no logic but the fever dream of Utagawa Kunisada, it whispers: beauty is best seen through distortion.

About the Artist

Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III (1786–1865), was a titan of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition, celebrated as the most commercially successful printmaker of his time.

Born in Edo, Kunisada trained under Toyokuni I, swiftly becoming famed for his vibrant kabuki actor portraits, bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), and sumo wrestlers.

Producing an astonishing 20,000 designs, he dominated Edo’s artistic world through bold compositions and striking colors, shaping public taste with unmatched innovation.

Rediscovered by modern scholarship, Kunisada now enjoys recognition for brilliantly capturing Edo’s lively cultural scene, leaving behind a legacy of visual poetry and dynamic storytelling.
