About the Artwork
Paul Klee's Old City abstracts the labyrinthine passages of a Tunisian medina into stacked pigment zones and incised marks. The 1924 watercolor moves through a spectrum—from ultramarine sky through golden sandstone warmth into indigo street-grids, arriving at magenta facades and amethyst foundations below.
Every triangular form carries echoes of flat-roofed houses witnessed during Klee's 1914 North African sojourn; every hatch mark evokes a shutter or doorway reduced to visual code. His Bauhaus-period method—oil transfer meeting wet-on-wet washes—allowed line to emerge as if excavated. Color does not decorate; it maps.
The composition reads as cartography of remembered light, an atlas of form stripped bare yet dense with sensation. This phone case carries that architectonic memory against the palm.
