Adam Buck (1759–1833) was an Irish neoclassical portraitist and miniature painter born in Cork, largely self-taught and steeped from the first in antiquity. Trained by instinct and ancient Greek vases more than any master, he worked across Cork and Dublin before settling in London in 1795, where Piccadilly and Soho became his studios and Regency society his canvas. His delicate watercolour portraits — profiles tilted like coins, mothers in Grecian gowns, children caught mid-gesture — earned patrons from George IV and the Duke of York to collector Thomas Hope.

Exhibiting over 170 works at the Royal Academy between 1795 and 1833, Buck shaped the visual language of Regency domesticity. His stipple engravings circulated widely, reproduced on ceramics and in drawing rooms across Britain. He illustrated Laurence Sterne's Sentimental Journey and proposed his own continuation of Sir William Hamilton's Greek vase studies. Where others painted the social world, Buck translated it into antiquity — giving Regency England the clean line, draped calm, and restrained beauty it wished to see in itself.
