Artist Biography

Leo Gestel (1881-1941) was a prominent Dutch painter and key figure in Dutch modernism.

Gestel was initially trained by his father, Willem Gestel, and his uncle, who had painted with Vincent van Gogh. He traveled to Paris, where he encountered the avant-garde.

Experimenting with cubism, futurism, expressionism, and postimpressionism, he worked alongside other leading artists like Piet Mondrian and Jan Sluyters.

Despite losing much of his work in a studio fire in 1929, Gestel remained a vital force in the modernist movement until his death in 1941.
