Wet silk gives a painter very little time. Suzuki Kiitsu spent his on Mountains. He flooded a patch about a foot tall with ash-gray wash, then dropped charcoal sumi into it before the sheen dried. The technique is tarashikomi, the pooled-ink hallmark of Edo Rinpa, and here it blooms across the crag in soft blots that pass for a forested slope.

Then the brush changes speed. Conifers go on dry and fast at the crest, every twig sharp against bare cloth. Lower down, Kiitsu paints nothing. Mist is the silk left untouched, the negative space Japanese painters call yohaku, its borders feathering wherever damp pigment crept outward and stalled.

One peak climbs through the fog with a flat, bruised crown. Maki evergreens crowd its right shoulder, their branches brushed so thick they read as a single shadow with trunks. A second summit waits behind in dove gray, already half erased. To the right a cliff slides upward and forgets its own edge.

Low in the corner sit three brushed characters, Kiitsu hitsu, over a cinnabar seal. This Japanese ink wash painting opens the triptych Three Evening Scenes from the right, where Japanese scrolls begin. As minimalist wall art, this print keeps one late Edo evening unfinished, a mountain still deciding how much of itself to show.

Origin Story

Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) was a Japanese painter of the Rinpa school, renowned for his luminous byōbu folding screens that blur the line between decorative art and dreamscape. A devoted pupil of Sakai Hōitsu, Kiitsu carried the Rinpa aesthetic into the late Edo period, blending reverence for his masters with bold, original flair. Once dismissed as a minor figure, he is now hailed as a key innovator—his Morning Glories and Mountain Stream in Summer and Autumn are celebrated as masterpieces of hyperreal beauty and compositional brilliance.

Kiitsu reimagined classical motifs—most notably Wind God and Thunder God—with a vivid theatricality and meticulous brushwork that elevated Edo Rinpa into a distinct, vibrant style. Though not the formal heir to Hōitsu’s lineage, Kiitsu mentored a generation of artists, shaping what is now often called the “Kiitsu school” of Edo Rinpa. His work continues to captivate audiences in modern exhibitions, earning overdue recognition for his exquisite, immersive visions of nature and myth.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
