About the Artwork

Count the eyes. A Cyclops stares from the forehead of Mlle Modiste, carmine-rimmed and yolk pale, with a single tear parked below it. Two more stare from her chest, where Howard Taft Lorenz painted her nipples as bullseyes. A fourth sleeps in a marigold box to her right. Somebody is always watching this woman.

Broadway knew her first. In 1905 Fritzi Scheff sang “Kiss Me Again” as Fifi, the hat girl turned diva. Three decades later a Federal Art Project painter in New York City pulled her offstage. He gave her tangerine skin and a stalk of a neck. A lone ear in the bottle-green dark wears a beaded chain at the lobe. It hears applause long after the theater empties.

Charcoal plaid and violet scratches cross the wall behind her. A black shadow leans in. Two crimson bands cuff it like a stagehand’s sleeve.

This American surrealism phone case carries New Deal art into the street. One eye stays open for business. The other dreams of Paris...

Origin Story

Howard Taft Lorenz (1906–1956) was an American painter whose entire career fits inside five feverish WPA years. Working for the Federal Art Project in New York City from 1935 to 1940, he painted Depression-era life with a folk-inflected directness, at once deadpan and tender: domestic interiors, smoke-curled poets, the bureaucratic limbo of the Home Relief Bureau. Fellow WPA painter Perkins Harnly remembered him as outlandish, a bohemian whose life rivalled his canvases for strangeness.

His best-known painting, Dismissal (1940), captures his friend Fred Becker receiving a WPA pink slip; it later graced Smithsonian Magazine’s October 1979 cover. Ten oils, including The Poet and Mlle Modiste, belong to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He died in Los Angeles in 1956, decades before that acclaim. Rare survivors such as Happy Birthday Gramma (1939) carry American Scene painting’s sly, intimate pulse.
