Eugène Delacroix let the Devil loose over a Gothic city in 1828. Mephistopheles in the Air opens his suite of seventeen lithographs for Goethe’s Faust, printed in Paris by Charles Motte beside Albert Stapfer’s French translation. Fresh from the Prologue in Heaven, the tempter drops through storm cloud with a wager in his teeth.

Look at the body. The nude hangs mid-stride. Thigh and calf carry lamp-black hatching, wrestler-heavy, above taloned feet that touch only vapor. His profile juts beneath a pronged hood, lips peeled back in a satanic leer. Raptor wings beat the graphite haze into ragged streaks.

Greasy lithographic crayon packs the torso in soot black, each muscle dragged across the stone’s grain until anatomy reads as weather. Feathered pinions scissor behind a horned cap. A clawed hand rakes ahead of him.

Far below, spires prick a half-sunk moon. A cross-topped tower sleeps in ash gray silhouette beneath him. French Romanticism rarely laughed this hard. This vintage art print brings the laugh indoors, a winged demon forever choosing which chimney to visit first.

Origin Story

Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was the French Romantic painter who let colour do the shouting. Born in Charenton-Saint-Maurice and trained under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, he studied Rubens and Veronese in the Louvre, then broke with Ingres’s Neoclassical line for surging brushwork and charged pigment. The Barque of Dante stunned the 1822 Paris Salon; The Massacre at Chios answered the Greek War of Independence with raw grief; The Death of Sardanapalus drowned an Assyrian court in crimson.

Liberty Leading the People (1830) turned barricade smoke into France’s emblem of revolt. An 1832 journey to Morocco and Algiers yielded Women of Algiers and decades of North African scenes, now read through Orientalism’s complicated lens. A lithographer of Shakespeare, Scott and Goethe’s Faust, a friend of Chopin, and muralist of Saint-Sulpice and the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon, Delacroix lit the way for the Impressionists.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
