About the Artwork

A foreign painter has been let past the front door, and the family has settled in a row on the bench. Eugène Delacroix gives each sitter one quick wash: a red skirt, a deep blue one, a scarf in lemon yellow. A child in a red hood looks out from behind the row, and a man in a gray coat anchors the right end. A woven carpet hangs behind them in red-brown triangles.

In 1832 few Moroccan households admitted a European with a sketchbook, and the Jewish families of Tangier were the ones who let him in. Delacroix had landed with Charles de Mornay's French mission, and on 21 February he attended a wedding in that community and filled his journal with it. This sheet is the quieter relative of that day.

The long bench is the main furniture of a Moroccan salon, called the sedari, with cushions backed against the wall and a rug hung above them. Pencil outlines every figure. Washes of rose, indigo and ochre pool where they meet, and bare paper shows between strokes. Loose gray marks shape the sleeves and the long coat, the faces keep a few clean dark touches, and the floor carpet is a few dabs of vermilion and teal. A gathering like this points toward the canvas he would paint in 1841.

Men and Women in an Interior, The Bouzaglo Home awaits your dining room or study as a sketchbook watercolor print, where every seat on the bench is taken and your pale wall fills with welcoming faces.

Origin Story

Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was the French Romantic painter who let colour do the shouting. Born in Charenton-Saint-Maurice and trained under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, he studied Rubens and Veronese in the Louvre, then broke with Ingres’s Neoclassical line for surging brushwork and charged pigment. The Barque of Dante stunned the 1822 Paris Salon; The Massacre at Chios answered the Greek War of Independence with raw grief; The Death of Sardanapalus drowned an Assyrian court in crimson.

Liberty Leading the People (1830) turned barricade smoke into France’s emblem of revolt. An 1832 journey to Morocco and Algiers yielded Women of Algiers and decades of North African scenes, now read through Orientalism’s complicated lens. A lithographer of Shakespeare, Scott and Goethe’s Faust, a friend of Chopin, and muralist of Saint-Sulpice and the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon, Delacroix lit the way for the Impressionists.
