About the Artwork

Marrakech is called the Red City and Hercules Brabazon Brabazon lets that iron-rich ground rise into walls of terracotta and apricot. This dreamy rendering of the city reading as fired clay. Sienna, sand and rust laid across the sheet and pressed slate-blue cloud down from above. An amber wall sliding into a wedge of shadow while the people at its foot stay in the light.

Two dark arched openings pierce the middle of the wall, a minaret and a few flat roofs sit on the skyline, and a cluster of tiny figures gathers at the lower right. The city wall is rammed earth mixed with lime, raised in the 1120s under the Almoravid ruler Ali ibn Yusuf. Earth like that takes the sun all day and gives it back as amber, so the shadow on the left side of the canvas falls as a long gray-blue wedge across the brown.

Brabazon, who painted all his life for pleasure, lifts touches of opaque white over the washes to catch sunlit edges, and the buff paper holds its own glow before any stroke lands. The brush dragging dry down the left side and leaving long pale scratches in the shadow. The grain making the wall feel baked.

Marrakech awaits your living room or bedroom as a terracotta city watercolor, where the afternoon heat stays on your wall long after the sun sets.

Origin Story

Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821–1906) was an English watercolourist born in Paris as Hercules Brabazon Sharpe. After graduating in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge, he defied his father’s plan for a legal career and left for Rome, studying music and art at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Accademia di San Luca. Inheriting the Connaught estates in 1847 meant taking the name Brabazon, and with it a lifetime of travel.

Admiring Turner and Velázquez, he painted Venice, the Riviera, Egypt and India in rapid, luminous washes of watercolour and gouache, living, as he put it, “for Art and Sunshine”. A self-styled gentleman amateur, he did not exhibit until he was seventy, when John Singer Sargent and the New English Art Club coaxed him toward the Goupil Gallery in London.
