About the Artwork

Harry Clarke hangs a ship where the moon should be. This Tales of Mystery and Imagination art print catches the worst second of Edgar Allan Poe's MS. Found in a Bottle. A giant vessel tips over the lip of a cobalt blue wave, bow first. Poe gave her four thousand tons in 1833. Clarke gives her sails of moss gray lace, scalloped like altar linen left out in the rain.

This vintage Symbolist illustration belongs above a desk stacked with macabre fiction. Tilt your head back like the watchers under the wave. Watch the lanterns swing in the rigging, one ember orange and one sea green. At the stern, a speck of a sailor in poppy red holds on. Behind him the sky is flat lampblack with no star to steer by.

Clarke made stained glass for Irish churches, and it shows. He painted this color plate in ink and watercolor for George G. Harrap's 1923 edition. The blue glows like a window at dusk. Down in the trough, pale swimmers stretch long necks toward the hull.

Irish Art Nouveau rarely got this strange. Hang this Gothic ghost ship illustration and your wall becomes a wave about to break.

Origin Story

Harry Clarke (1889–1931) was the Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator who taught lead to draw. Born in Dublin to a church decorator, he apprenticed in his father's studio and took evening classes at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, collecting gold medals before he was twenty-five. A leading figure of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement, he steeped Art Nouveau and Art Deco in French Symbolism.

More than 130 windows followed: the Honan Chapel in Cork, The Eve of St. Agnes, Bewley's Café on Grafton Street, the Geneva Window. Rich colour. Deep blues. On paper, the same heavy black line haunted Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery & Imagination and Goethe's Faust, the last prefiguring 1960s psychedelia. Diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1929, he died at forty-one in Chur, Switzerland, bound for Dublin.
