About this Artwork

King Sal strides through the threshold of two realms. Where ochre earth breathes beneath Mughal domes, and clouded heavens teem with myth. His golden robes not armor, but parley. Kala Yavana greets him not in conquest, but confrontation laced with prophecy.

Around them, the city swells: towers bloom like prayers, each window a whispered witness. Courtiers shimmer in peacock silks, and parasols tilt as if translating royal intent into shade. The hills behind them remember older gods, their forested bodies twisting in time's hush. Above it all floats an empty throne pavilion, embroidered with celestial detachment—waiting.

This Harivamsa miniature brims with allegory—not through abstraction, but through precise color logic, architectural latticework, and the inscrutable tilt of limbs. It's not myth illustrated—it’s myth performed. A visual archive of negotiation staged at the edge of war, this art print binds epic and everyday, sacred and civic, into a single, impossible breath.

Artist Biography

The Harivaṃśa is a monumental Sanskrit epic that serves as an appendix to the Mahābhārata, expanding on Krishna’s divine lineage, cosmic origins, and mythic exploits. Revered as the Harivaṃśa Purāṇa, this ancient text is a cornerstone of Hindu mythology, weaving together genealogical histories, cosmic creation narratives, and esoteric hymns.

Across its three parvas—Harivaṃśa Parva, Viṣṇu Parva, and Bhaviṣya Parva—the text chronicles Krishna’s birth, his pastoral youth in Vrindavan, and his role in shaping the destiny of Dwarka.

Rich in poetic allegory, theological insights, and philosophical depth, the Harivaṃśa predates later Puranic texts like the Viṣṇu Purāṇa and Bhāgavata Purāṇa, making it an invaluable source on Krishna’s early worship, Vedic cosmology, and the evolving tradition of Vaishnavism. The text also presents alternate creation myths, detailed accounts of the Kali Yuga, and hymns to both Shiva and Vishnu, reflecting the synthesis of Vedic and post-Vedic Hindu thought.

A sacred bridge between epic history and divine mythology, the Harivaṃśa continues to illuminate the intricate tapestry of Hinduism’s literary and spiritual heritage.
