Adolfo Farsari's Jugglers kneel on tatami with their fans shut, two performers dressed for daikagura and caught in the second before the act begins.

The girl's kataginu juts out wide, a paper kite cut from old-gold brocade with vermilion tortoiseshell hexagons and a rose madder lining. Wisteria-violet sleeves pool at her elbows. Beside her, a man with cropped Meiji hair wears the same winged kamishimo in olive gold, chalk-pale blossoms scattered down his trailing hakama. Samurai once wore this outfit to face their lords. By the 1880s the warrior class was gone, yet entertainers kept its tailoring on stage.

A Yokohama colorist touched this hand-tinted gelatin silver photograph with watercolor so thin the silver still shows through. Each painter finished two or three prints a day. His vest lining took an aquamarine wash and her cheeks a petal-pink flush. Behind them the shoji screen stayed tea-stained sepia, a paper grid with no color to its name.

Adolfo Farsari came from Vicenza by way of the American Civil War. He sold Yokohama shashin to steamship tourists hungry for Japonisme, and this hand-colored studio portrait has the trade at full polish. Meiji-era travelers carrying such portraits home in lacquered souvenir albums. And this vintage Japanese art print keeps what they paid for: a troupe of two staring down the lens, props folded, waiting for somebody to throw the first ball.

Origin Story

Adolfo Farsari (1841–1898) was an Italian photographer who built Yokohama's last notable foreign-owned studio from nerve and albumen. Born in Vicenza, he soldiered for Italy, rode with the Union cavalry through the American Civil War, then surfaced in Japan selling maps, guidebooks and smokers' supplies. In 1883 he taught himself photography from books. Two years later, with Tamamura Kozaburō, he bought the Stillfried & Andersen studio, Felice Beato's old stock included.

Then fire. In 1886 every negative burned, and Farsari spent five months re-photographing the country. A. Farsari & Co. answered with hand-coloured albumen prints bound in lacquer and silk, tinted by colourists versed in Japanese painting techniques. This is Yokohama shashin: Meiji-era Japan staged for foreign eyes, ukiyo-e conventions meeting Western lenses. Kipling praised it. Historians now re-evaluate what was once dismissed as tourist kitsch.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
