Origin Story

Tosa Mitsuoki (1617–1691) is the Japanese painter who carried the Tosa school out of provincial Sakai into the Kyoto imperial court. He moved with his father, Tosa Mitsunori, to Kyoto in 1634, and by 1654 reclaimed the office of edokoro azukari, head court painter, a title lost to the Tosa family since the Muromachi period. Steeped in Yamato-e tradition, he tempered its classical line with tonal washes and gold-leafed atmosphere drawn from the rival Kano school.

His brush favored kachō-e, bird-and-flower painting, especially renderings of quail, alongside handscrolls of The Tale of Genji across fusuma and folding screens. Precise yet tender, his compositions dissolved figures into mist and gold, securing the Tosa lineage's survival into the Edo period.
