About the Artwork

Sleep under this, and the Seven Gods of Fortune empty their pockets on you all night. Takara-zukushi means a collection of treasures, and this Japanese bedding cover takes the phrase literally. Luck falls in rice-white streaks down a sky of ink-deep aizome indigo. They rain on Daikoku’s lucky mallet, fat with amber gold pigment.

This futonji, dyed around the late nineteenth century, likely traveled in a bridal trousseau to a stranger’s house. Read it as a bride’s inventory of wishes. The hat and straw cloak of invisibility float at center, plumed in salmon pink. A cinnabar table holds branching coral, wealth hauled up from the sea floor. Leafy tachibana citrus drift past in chalk-pale skins, each one a wish for long years.

Tsutsugaki, the tube-drawn paste resist, gave every auspicious charm its bright edge. Japan’s mingei collectors later prized this country craft. The cotton has outlived the marriage it blessed. As a Japanese textile art print, the old wedding cloth keeps its promise of plenty and lets the gods go on spilling.

Origin Story

Yogi and futonji, Japan's traditional bedcovers, turn sleep into inheritance. Kimono-shaped and padded, these quilted comforters descended from Edo nightwear, worn like garments before settling into bedding proper. Cotton, once a luxury, was stitched into wide panels seamed from narrow tanmono bolts, then hand-decorated in tsutsugaki paste-resist dyeing or silk shibori, treated as one canvas for bold, auspicious imagery.

Most prized were bridal covers, stitched for a trousseau and paraded through village processions in Kyushu and Shikoku ahead of the wedding night. A hōō phoenix alighting on paulownia branches, emblem of fidelity and prosperity, sheltered newlyweds through their first nights, then was folded away, kept for special occasions across a lifetime of Edo and Meiji-era craft.
