This Edo period detail of ink on paper comes from Getsuju's late 18th-century hanging scroll Frog and Mouse. Ink wash pools into warts along his flanks. His belly stays bare paper, an oyster white moon. Down by his right foot, a small white mouse sits cut from that same blank, the quiet guest who helps lend the scroll its name.
Scholars know little about this painter. His Frog and Mouse hanging scroll carries a signature noting he worked with a cup in hand, and you can feel it in the eyebrows.
