About the Artwork

Three hiogi court fans lie open on soot-black lacquer, their cypress slats spread into pewter gray arcs. G. A. Audsley’s Japanese Fans and Floral Heliogravure Print starts with Heian-era ceremony pressed flat. One rivet pins the largest fan. From it slats swing outward, each stitched near the rim by a comma of silk thread.

Somebody built this surface grain by grain. Urushi sap went down in coats, then metal dust was sifted over the wet film until specks lit the night behind the leaves. That is maki-e, the sprinkled picture of Japanese lacquer art, and Audsley claimed it as Plate XIII in The Ornamental Arts of Japan. In the 1880s a camera did the brush’s job. Light bit the design into copper. A Paris press drove ink into damp paper, where bellflowers surfaced in ash silver.

Japanese poets counted these plants over a thousand years ago. The Man’yoshu lists seven autumn grasses, and their descendants push up through folding fans somebody dropped and never came back for. Thoroughwort nods at the upper left. Lower down, kikyo balloon flowers open five-pointed stars against the widest fan. A vine painted on its slats trails toward the morning glory rooting in the corner.

Look at the cords. Silk loops into flower knots at the guard sticks. They hang slack, ready for a courtier’s hand. Under low lamplight, this Meiji-era Japonisme art print lets the fans lift a fraction off the paper.

Origin Story

George Ashdown Audsley (1838–1925) was a Scottish architect, artist, and writer renowned for his contributions to art and design. In partnership with his brother, William, he established the firm W. & G. Audsley, which designed notable Gothic Revival churches and eclectic synagogues in Liverpool and London.

Audsley was a prolific author, producing lavishly illustrated works on ornamentation and Japanese art, such as The Keramic Art of Japan (1875), co-authored with James Lord Bowes.

His expertise extended to pipe organ design; he conceived the organ for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, later installed as the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia.

Audsley's interdisciplinary talents significantly influenced both Western appreciation of Japanese aesthetics and advancements in architectural design.
