About the Artwork

No loom has touched cloth yet. Ito Nishiki, Peonies and Treasure Flowers is a kimono pattern drawn on paper, a set of orders written for silk that was still inside the worm.

Ito Nishiki means thread brocade. In Kyoto's Nishijin district, weavers built such cloth one colored weft at a time, and a boy sat on top of the drawloom lifting warps by hand. Somebody painted this page between 1750 and 1900, across the Edo and Meiji eras. The artist left no name.

So the flowers do the signing. An aubergine peony swells at the lower left, its apricot-cream center ringed in celadon green. Japan calls the peony the king of flowers. Its neighbors never grew anywhere. They are hōsōge, treasure flowers assembled in Tang China and carried along the Silk Road to Nara temples. One wears cobalt petals rimmed with pale cerulean.

Vermilion fills every gap, and a gilt fret lattice crawls across the corner. This Japanese textile design art print keeps its promise open. The shuttle is still in the air. The brocade humming in a hand-mixed key, each outline lit like a fuse.

Origin Story

Ito Nishiki — literally "yarn brocade" — names the luminous weft-patterned silk of Kyoto's Nishijin district, where dyed threads and gilded metallic strands cross the warp to summon rabbits, florals, and geometric lattices across kimono and obi cloth. Its lineage descends from the weft brocades once called karanishiki, refined through the Nara and Heian courts into a distinctly Japanese idiom.

Each panel testifies to Nishijin's divided labour — dyers, pattern-drafters, and weavers passing silk, gold, and silver leaf through raised warp threads. Surviving examples still circulate as fine art prints, a quiet testament to Kyoto's enduring textile craft.
